Sun Life Financial is one of the leading real estate owners and developers in Canada, with over $3 billion worth of real estate assets held for its own account. In Western Canada, the company owns full or partial interests in over 3.2 million square feet of office space in Greater Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg in addition to 4.4 million square feet of industrial buildings.

A Sustainable Corporation

Owning a real estate portfolio for investment purposes requires Sun Life to be a socially and environmentally responsible landlord. Environmental compliance has always been a cornerstone of our real estate investment strategy, and we continue to broaden our environmental approach. The strategy is to own a portfolio of real estate assets that have a sustainable footprint achieved through proactive management of their effects on the environment.

Of special note is Sun Life Financial’s leadership in investing in renewable energy for more than two decades. In 2006 our investments in this sector totaled over $1.1 billion and included hydroelectric power, wind biomass, and ethanol projects across the country. Our commitment to supporting these initiatives underscores not only the company’s concern in future generations, but also our focus on investing in growth sectors to provide value for our customers.

Sustainable Real Estate

Sun Life’s primary goal for existing buildings is to actively monitor and manage the environmental footprint of each property. In doing so, our first objective is to align ourselves with organizations in the real estate industry, such as BOMA Canada and the Canada Green Building Council, which have identified industry best practices and developed programs to help landlords achieve optimal environmental performance.

To date, 61 per cent (by market value) of Sun Life’s existing commercial real estate has been awarded either a BOMA BESt or LEED® EB designation, including the 2010 achievement of a LEED® EB-O&M Gold designation for innovative physical and operational improvements to our worldwide headquarters in Toronto.
